zhng my comp
afternoon, me was watching show on my comp and it dieded on me... the comp switch itself off that usually signals that the cpu is overheated.. or worse!! so i open the casing and tried to turn it on again but cannot. then i discovered that the water in the tubing was not flowing. heh heh a bit of background info here... me's comp runs on water cooling one (hiao poh hor?). so after trying a few time, i determined that the water pump had died.
so me went to simlim to find replacement but hor, the shop that previously sold me the water cooling kit (2 yrs ago) no more liao. worse, none of the shops there sell it anymore! a check on the Internet told me that water cooling not in fashion oredi cos got improved cooling performance in the newer fans... haiz...
so i went to carrefour to see if i can find water pump for fish tank (smart hor?), but dun have; not even in the pets section!! then i went to homefix. they got sell gardening stuff but no fish tank stuff also... brr...
so i gave up and went home. luckily i managed to find a small aquarium shop near my place. the shop sells quite a few water filters (which i realised is actually a water pump, heehee). but hor, i found it hard to explain to the ah pek there. he thought i wanna use in my fish tank, i think if i tell him i use in my comp he sure think i siao. so i told him i jus wanna pump water. then he kept recommending me the big pumps which obviously couldnt fit into my comp. (he said big one more power). he said the one he used, could pump for 4 fish tanks all at once.
power...
in the end, i bought the smallest one. hehee!
then when i tried to replace the pump, i discovered that the reservoir was too small for the new pump. haiz... why like dat... so bopian have to replace the reservoir as well...
so i asked my mum for any suitable container and after some search, she gave me a round container which was used to contain some food stuff prevously. it seemed to fit into the confined space rather well though. but the cover dun have the necessary holes for the rubber tubing and power cable. luckily my handyman dad helped me cut some holes on the cover - 2 for the rubber tubes, 1 for the power cable.
so after fixing it into the comp, i test run with normal tap water and it seemed to work quite well. then i replaced the water with battery water and coolant. not bad, the temperature was able to maintain between 39 - 48 ºC. but one issue remain... the AC power plug was too big to go through the slots behind the casing, so now i couldnt close my casing's side panel.
anyhow, the end result is what you see in the peekture below...
total damage - the old water pump and reservoir, $9 for the new pump, the new 'reservoir', my PDA's AC adapter (the plastic cover of the plug crumbled when i was reconfiguring the placement of the plugs on the power strip), petrol and parking charges, and a whole afternoon worth of productivity...
